Seabury Takes Wellness to a Whole New Level
Since its inception in 1992, Seabury Life Care Community has always had a strong commitment to wellness as an integral part of its mission, but now Seabury has taken wellness to a whole new level. This is a paradigm shift in Seabury’s core services and values which today incorporates fitness, nutrition and spirituality along with traditional health care as part of its philosophy. This emphasis on wellness is carried out through innovative programs designed to slow and even reverse the effects of aging. Seabury’s goal is to embrace a “Wellness for Life” philosophy as part of our residents’ daily activity so that it becomes an important part of their lives.

Seabury’s Circle of Wellness Program…..
Five years ago, Seabury introduced the Circle of Wellness program. The concept was developed because Seabury believes that wellness should be continuous- it has no beginning and no end- it is a lifestyle choice that promotes good health. Wellness is all about feeling good, attaining one’s highest level of functioning and maintaining one’s independence. A growing amount of research has consistently shown that healthy lifestyle choices are a necessary component of successful aging to maintain or improve not only physical health but mental health and cognitive skills as well. It is very difficult to ignore the overwhelming fact that at any age, taking simple steps in managing one’s own health could add productive years to one’s life.

Seabury’s Pathway to Successful Aging…..
Seabury’s new Circle of Wellnes program is the pathway to successful aging and ensures a very active lifestyle. It is based on the principle that to a large extent we control our own health and well-being. We have embraced five areas of successful aging that are encompassed in Seabury’s Circle of Wellness, physical/nutritional, spiritual, social/emotional, intellectual and vocational. The Circle of Wellness is self-directed by active and independent residents. Seabury is a wellness partner in this process, promoting total wellness by engaging the mind, body and spirit through programs, education and support.
Physical/ Nutritional Dimension of Wellness
Seabury residents are enthusiastic participants in our Fitness & Wellness Program. Our state-of-the-art Wellness Complex is fully equipped with strength training machines, a fitness studio, pool and spa. Fitness specialists, therapeutic massage therapists, and a registered dietician are important components of our “Wellness for Life” program.
Scheduled exercise classes are offered in toning, strength training, endurance, aquatic fitness/aerobics, aquatic therapy/conditioning, breathing, flexibility/mobility and balance. Fitness specialists are available to offer wellness counseling, personal training and to assist residents in developing a personalized fitness program. Nearby golf courses, tennis courts, biking paths, and hiking trails, along with Seabury’s extensive walking trails, add another dimension of fitness/wellness.
We use a holistic approach to wellness by offering specialty classes such as yoga, pilates, tai chi and reiki. In addition, there is nutrition counseling with Seabury’s registered dietician, weight management, massage therapy, medication and wellness/educational seminars.
Research has shown benefits from these programs range from an increase in strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance to a decrease in blood pressure, cholesterol, body fat, stress, and anxiety, resulting in an overall sense of well being. All these activities combined will enable individuals to maintain their independence leading them to a longer, healthier, and more productive lifestyle.
Spiritual Dimension of Wellness….
Meaningful life experiences, opportunities for self-actualization, nurturing long lasting personal relationships, and social, organizational and spiritual connectedness are important aspects of life at Seabury.
Social/Emotional Dimension of Wellness…
Residing at Seabury fosters deeper relationships with new and “old” friends, extended family and those who matter most. A vital and active lifestyle of independence, friendships, and future security, allows one to successfully navigate through their later years.
Intellectual opportunities…..
Seabury has always been known for its intellectual opportunities such as college level courses of Senior Academy and ALP (Adult Learning Program), the popular Exercise Your Mind program and guest lecturers. Seabury believes the old adage “use it or lose it” applies to your mental power as much as to the rest of your body. Mental stimulation through educational classes, mind games and challenging reading can keep your brain agile and strong and has been proven to ward off Alzheimer’s and other diseases.
Vocational Dimension of Wellness…..
Opportunities for personal growth and skill development are an integral part of life at Seabury. Making a difference by volunteering, serving on committees such as the “Action Forum” or Trails Committee, and being passionate about “giving back” and doing things for the “greater good” are common place at Seabury.

Although aging is inevitable, there are things that we can do to face the challenges gracefully, yet directly, by taking an active role in our own health. Seabury truly believes that the key to successful aging is remaining physically active, eating well, exercising your mind, and maintaining personal relationships.
